Biography:
My name is Emiliana German Roman, with many people in my life still endearingly calling me "Emily". I was born in Boston, MA to Dominican parents and have two older brothers. I was born in Roxbury, lived in Dorchester on and off and did most of my growing up in Jamaica Plain. From early on in my life, I knew that in everything I would do, my Northstar would always remain the same: helping others. I started working at 13 and in every position I have held since then, that NorthStar has remained true and bright, especially within the communities that built the resilient woman I have now become and will continue to be.
Why did you become a doula?
I became a doula for a multitude of reasons; the most life-changing being the magical experience I had helping to deliver my niece in 2024. Her mother is one of the people I hold dearest in this lifetime and even with the complications that arose, without even knowing what a doula was at that time, I stepped into that role when it was needed. It was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life and raised the standard to which 1) I wish to birth my own children hopefully someday AND 2) I want every birthing person to experience their own birthing story, surrounded by loved ones and especially surrounded by women who love and care for them deeply.
What is your personal connection to birth/family/community?
To me family is everything and I know first hand that family may not always be biological, there are communities we build for ourselves and they are families all the same. During births, birthing people are extremely vulnerable and yet, there is an intangible strength that radiates from them and it truly takes a village/community - regardless of our circumstances, we all deserve that and am committed to helping strengthen and foster those communities in whatever way, shape or form they come in and transition into.
What is your philosophy of doula care?
My philosophy of doula care is rooted in a trauma-informed approach that gives autonomy back to the client in the ways needed, desired and empowering to them. I admire holistic approaches to care as a plant-based medicine certified doula, and wish to the support clients in mind, body, and spirit through honest communication, active listening and resource sharing.
