Biography:
Nayomi S. Dowman is a Boricua woman born and raised in Boston Ma. As life so gracefully introduced pregnancy and parenting to her, she became fascinated with all things birth. It wasn’t until realizing what the words “Maternal Mortality” meant not everyone got that picturesque birth. The alarming report she saw in 2018 truly sparked her flame to activate and learn all she can to protect our Black and Brown birthing folks. Starting with her home town of Boston. As a social justice advocate, she will continue to fight and organize to empower families to always pursue the best care for them.
Why did you become a doula?:
I had always had an inkling that this was my direction, but it wasn’t until a friend made the move to push me down the path I was meant for. What had pulled me and still drives my reason is fighting the inequities and discriminatory behaviors that are found in hospital settings/ modern medicine in general. But along the away, I remembered the true calling which is to support at such a beautiful vulnerable time in life. It is too often dismissed as just another day; when in-fact it’s a full transformational event for all those involved. Birth is sacred and should be regarded as such!
What is your personal connection to birth/family/community?:
I have been blessed to become a mother three times. I have been chosen to help form and pave ways for humans on this earth and that has truly formed my perspective on how vitally important community is to our healing and resistance as a people. I want to be able to create a beautiful interlocked web of resource and knowledge for the betterment of my community!
What is your philosophy of doula care?:
My philosophy is: your birthright is to birth right …however that may look! I will always strive to lead with love, to lean in and listen, advice and guide, be still and present to support the birthing person and their chosen kin to the best of my capabilities. At every step, checking biases and restoring justice for my client, because if not, we can fall for the same fake propaganda.
Who is your ideal client?:
I’m truly open to anyone seeking assistance; however, we truly must align in values and purposeful energies, to benefit myself and the expectant family.
