Biography:
My name is Shateara and I am a mother to two living children. I have experience in multiple fields both medical and non-medical based. I enjoy music, reading and helping others. In my spare time I like to bake and try cooking new dishes.
Why did you become a doula?
I became a full-spectrum doula because I want to help my community. There is not enough information about doulas' services. I have been seeing an increase in moms asking for doulas.
I envision one of the most rewarding parts of doula work is helping moms & their families understand their options & services available to them. Making the pregnancy from beginning to end as smooth a process as possible.
What is your personal connection to birth/family/community?
The personal connection I have to birth/family/ community is being of service. For many years I have done community service within the community. I have volunteered at schools, community events and organizational events. Previously I was a phlebotomist at BIDMC. I also have training as an MA. Over time I have personally experienced infant loss and difficult pregnancies as well as supported those around me dealing with these same situations.
What is your philosophy of doula care?
To provide emotional and informational support to birthing families. I want them to feel heard, understood and respected throughout the whole process not only by me but by their medical providers as well.
Who is your ideal client?
I believe there is no such thing as an "ideal" client. As a doula I want to work various types of clients. This is one way to continue to better myself, build my skillset and be able to serve clients to my fullest capacity.
